This was a very disappointing dining experience, especially given that this was meant to be a family celebration. We dined at UNO on December 21 (Sunday) for lunch as a group of 10 adults, 1 teenager, and a 9-year-old child at Table 35. We arrived around 1:00 PM. The child has ARFID and did not eat any buffet food at all, except for marshmallows and a little bit of rice. He had already eaten beforehand (Jollibee) since he only eats very specific items, which is why he did not consume any meal during our stay. At around 3:00 PM, I approached the counter and noticed that the child had been billed. I raised this concern immediately. In our previous visits to UNO, we never encountered this issue. This incident only happened because our attending waiter failed to properly observe or clarify the situation. What made this experience unacceptable was the response from both the attending waiter and the floor manager. Despite explaining the situation clearly, the manager rigidly insisted on “rules” and handled the matter in a way that made it feel as if we were being accused of lying over a ₱400+ charge. This was deeply disrespectful, especially given that the child genuinely did not eat. We cannot simply leave a child at home because of his condition. Eventually, the fee was waived but only after prolonged discussion. This should not have escalated to that point. A manager should have the discretion and judgment to handle edge cases like this with empathy and professionalism. To be clear, this was never about the money. I even left a ₱400 tip. The issue was the treatment we received and the lack of sensitivity toward a child’s condition. The incident caused unnecessary tension within our family and overshadowed what was supposed to be our father’s birthday celebration. I strongly recommend that both the attending waiter and the floor manager be retrained on customer handling, especially in situations involving children and medical conditions. The service industry requires empathy, attentiveness, and sound judgment; none of which were demonstrated during this visit. Excellent buffet with great service. Dessert bar and salad bar are the highlights.
