⭐ 1/5 — Thank Goodness for the 50% Discount
With such a high eatigo rating, we came to Chat & Chow Poolside Cafe with huge expectations. We left wondering if we had somehow eaten at the wrong place.
Finding the cafe itself is already a mini adventure. The address states Level 1, but you actually need to take the lift to Level 4 and follow the signs. Eventually, you’ll find a small cafe beside the hotel swimming pool. All the indoor seats were taken, so we sat outside by the pool.
We ordered enough dishes to give the kitchen a pretty fair chance:
Fried Spicy Calamari Rings ($12), Nasi Goreng ($16), Hawaiian Pizza ($20), MacPherson Beef Burger ($21), Fish & Chips ($18), and Grilled Rib Eye Steak ($28).
Thankfully, we had a 50% Eatigo discount. And I genuinely mean thankfully.
It took around 30 minutes for the food to arrive. At least everything came together, so credit where it’s due.
Unfortunately, that was where the good news ended.
The calamari was quite possibly the worst calamari I’ve ever eaten. Thick, dense and strangely reminiscent of fish cake. If nobody told me it was calamari, I’m not sure I would have guessed.
The Nasi Goreng was remarkably tasteless. The two chicken satay sticks that came with it, however, were actually nice. Congratulations to those two satay sticks, you were the undisputed stars of our six-dish lunch.
The MacPherson Beef Burger was tough and lacking in flavour. Thankfully, chilli sauce exists.
Fish & Chips? Bad. By this point, consistency had at least been achieved.
Then came the Hawaiian Pizza. Thick dough and a taste that reminded us of convenience food from the supermarket. Except I’ve honestly had frozen supermarket pizzas that I enjoyed more.
Finally, the Rib Eye Steak. We specifically asked for medium rare.
It arrived well done.
At this stage, we had spiritually checked out of lunch. There was no anger left. No disappointment left. We just wanted to finish whatever we could and go home.
The remarkable thing is that we didn’t order just one or two dishes and get unlucky. We ordered SIX different items, calamari, fried rice, pizza, burger, fish and steak, and somehow almost everything managed to disappoint.
There is one genuinely interesting perk: we were told that customers dining here can use the hotel swimming pool and gym for free. If that’s what you’re coming for, perhaps there’s some value to be found.
As for the food, the greatest culinary highlight of our afternoon was literally two sticks of chicken satay.
The only other saving grace was Eatigo’s 50% discount. Had we paid full price, I think this review might have required therapy.
Even at 50% off, I wouldn’t come back.
Save your money.
Save your calories.
Go eat somewhere else.
Really.
